Mulch & Decorative Groundcover
Mulch, decorative rock, river stone, gravel beds, and edging — the finishing layer that ties your landscape together and keeps it looking sharp.
The layer that makes everything look finished
Mulch and groundcover aren't just cosmetic. A properly mulched bed holds moisture, moderates soil temperature, suppresses weeds, and protects root systems through the Roanoke Valley's freeze-thaw cycles. Decorative rock does the same job with a different aesthetic and less annual maintenance.
We handle everything from annual mulch refreshes to full bed conversions with decorative stone, river rock, or gravel. Each job includes proper bed prep, edging, and material installation at the correct depth. It's straightforward work, but the details matter — and that's where most DIY and low-bid jobs fall short.
What this service covers
Whether you need a quick mulch refresh or a full groundcover conversion, here's the scope of work we handle.
Mulch Installation & Annual Refresh
Fresh hardwood, dyed, or natural mulch installed at the right depth. Beds are edged, old mulch is turned or removed, and material is kept clear of plant crowns and trunks.
Decorative Rock & Gravel Beds
Clean, low-maintenance rock and gravel installations over landscape fabric. Options include pea gravel, crushed granite, marble chips, and more — matched to your style.
River Rock & Boulder Accents
Natural river rock for dry creek beds, drainage features, and accent areas. Boulders placed for visual interest, retaining function, or erosion control.
Landscape Fabric & Edging
Commercial-grade fabric under rock beds, steel or aluminum edging to separate beds from turf, and natural-cut edging for a clean, defined look.
How we handle a groundcover project
Clean prep, correct depth, and attention to the edges. That's what separates a professional job from a pile of mulch dumped in a bed.
Bed assessment
We evaluate existing bed conditions, check edging, note any weeds or drainage issues, and measure square footage to calculate material needs accurately.
Prep & edging
Beds are weeded, old material is turned or removed, and edging is cut or installed. For rock conversions, landscape fabric goes down before any material.
Material installation
Mulch, rock, or gravel is spread evenly at the correct depth. Material is kept away from plant stems, and any boulders or accent stones are placed by hand or machine.
Cleanup & inspection
Walkways, driveways, and lawn edges are blown clean. We walk the property with you to make sure every bed looks right before we leave.

Mulch & groundcover questions
How often should mulch be refreshed? +
Most landscape beds in the Roanoke Valley benefit from a mulch refresh once a year, typically in spring. Hardwood mulch breaks down over the season, losing color and depth. An annual top-up keeps beds looking clean and maintains weed suppression and moisture retention.
Is decorative rock better than mulch? +
It depends on the application. Rock doesn't decompose and rarely needs replacing, making it lower maintenance in the long run. But it doesn't enrich the soil the way mulch does, and it can retain more heat in summer. We'll help you decide based on your beds, plants, and goals.
Do you install landscape fabric under mulch or rock? +
We install landscape fabric under decorative rock and gravel to prevent material from sinking into the soil. For mulch beds with plantings, we typically skip fabric because it can restrict root growth and water penetration. Each job is assessed individually.
How deep should mulch be applied? +
Two to three inches is ideal for most beds. Too thin and it won't suppress weeds or retain moisture effectively. Too thick and it can trap excess moisture against plant stems and encourage rot. We keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks and plant crowns.
Can you replace old mulch with decorative rock? +
Yes. We remove the old mulch, clean and regrade the bed, install landscape fabric, and lay the new rock or gravel. It's a clean conversion that eliminates annual mulch refreshes and gives the beds a completely different look.
